Giveaway: Diplomat Aero Fountain Pen

Diplomat Aero

Back in Season 2, I implemented a Reviewer Code of Ethics to help address concerns that my reviews were being unduly influenced by receiving “free” pens from manufacturers and retailers. You can read the whole thing here, but the tl;dr version is that I can’t keep pens that manufacturers give me for review purposes. I can either buy them, return them, or give them away. Up until now, I’ve never had to tackle what to do in the case of pens provided by distributors, who aren’t technically the manufacturers, but still have a financial interest in their product line selling well. Against my deep desires to do otherwise, I’ve opted to include distributors in the same group as manufacturers. As a result, I’m unable to keep this pen.

Rarely has my resolve to be transparent been so thoroughly tested.

The pen for this giveaway was provided to The Pen Habit by Points of Distinction, the US distributor for Diplomat pens. It was provided free of charge in exchange for an honest review. (And the honest truth is that I LOVE THIS PEN.) So, I’m very sad to be giving it away. But not entirely sad, because I have already ordered one in matte brown to be delivered in a few weeks.

As with all Pen Habit giveaways, this one is being handled by the good folks at Rafflecopter. You can enter by following @penhabit on Twitter, leaving a comment on the blog about what number on the “Matt Armstrong Feedback Scale” do you like your nibs, or you can email an entry as well.  Make sure you follow the instructions! I verify every winner, and sometimes have to disqualify people! (After all, gotta make you work for the entry a little bit, don’t I?  As Bugs Bunny says, “Ain’t I a stinker?”)

  • Sam Ferguson

Thanks for taking the time to review this pen, Matt! Truth is, I’ll probably be picking one of these up either. But I certainly wouldn’t be sad about winning one 🙂

  • gtcompscientist

    Fingers crossed

  • NoFuture NoHope

Thank you for a great review. I would love to get this black one.

I like to have a little bit of feedback, so I would say 2 or 3 🙂

  • Dan (Don) Hoizner

I probably hover around 3 or 4 on the Matt scale :D.

  • kcnightfang

I’d love to try this pen!

I think I generally like about a 3-5, with the 5 being for italics.

  • I prefer a 3-4 on the feedback scale. Just enough to feel the paper under the nib, but still quite smooth.

  • hard to say, I enjoy the ones with a little feedback and the smooth ones but i guess a 6. That pen looks great! Thanks for the review and the giveaway.

  • Tas

    Thanks Matt.
    Feedback, hmm depends.
For sketching I like super smoothness (probably a MAFS of 2) but for writing, if the nib is too smooth, well, I get so carried away that often I’m barely able to read my own words so a MAFS of 5 . . .

  • Geocom13

I also like a smooth nib with just a little feedback, maybe 2 or 3.

Thanks for the review, Matt. Would love to win this beautiful pen.

  • Ali El M

Thanks for your honest review and for the giveaway.
I prefer a 2 on your feedback scale, but even nibs that offer a lot of feedback are very usable as long as they don’t catch the paper while writing.

  • Max Moore

3 – Smooth, but with a noticeable feedback. When the nib is too smooth, I have difficulties writing beautifully.

  • EW Marshall

Nib Feedback – I like it pretty darn smooth. Maybe a 2 or 3. This is one reason why I like Tomoe River paper so much. Really smooth.

  • Tristan_Noelmans

For me I prefer something like frozen butter on a hot surface. That’s like a 2 or 3 I guess?

  • anaximander70

That pen looks amazing! And I’d have never even heard of it if not for your excellent review.

  • René

Best of luck to everyone! On the Matt Armstrong feedback scale I would probably like a 2 or a 2.5 just as the Diplomat delivers. What a coincidence! 😉

  • Carlos Iván Fuentes

Thanks for the giveaway! I had just seen one of these in Massdrop and was about to buy it, but as it is I’m already way over my pen budget for the month, so I decided against it. The giveaway is making me less bad about not buying the pen.

  • Mary Tudor

On the feedback scale, I wold say I usually like my pens around a 2 or 3. But I’d rather have a feedback-y pen with good ink flow over a smooth pen with bad ink flow.

  • Kyle Parsons

Thank you for the entry. I prefer a 2 on the scale. I’ve never been graced by a 1 so I can’t speak for that.

  • Matthew Scott

I prefer my nibs with a little bit of feedback… One a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being glassy smooth, I prefer around a 3 in terms of feedback. 🙂

  • Alex de Vos

Cool, this pen is high on my wishlist! 🙂 I like my nibs fairly smooth, lets say between 2 and 4. Thanks for the giveaway

  • RobbS

a remarkable fresh looking design. Thanks for your kind review.

  • Rachael

    Thanks for the chance!

  • Ted

I am not the pickiest of penners, so I am happy with a nib probably anywhere “lower” on your scale from a six or so. But you gave this a 2 or 3, so I am psyched! Thanks, Matt, for the review!

  • Raúl Salamero

Personally, I like some feedback on my pens… japanese style feedback, the right kind of feedback, not scratchiness. That would be like a 3-4 in the “Matt Armstrong Feedback Scale”.

Of course I don’t mind a ver smooth nib. I love my ver¡y smooth nibs on my Faber Castell eMotion or my Lamy 2000.

I like this Aero, unique design and apparently good performance too. Diplomat is an underrated brand, I think.

  • I tend to like japanese pens a lot. So I actually enjoy a little bit of feedback. May be 3 is my number, 1 being butter on hot glass. This pen sings beautifully. The sound it made when you were drawing the horizontal straight line was cool.

  • Nathan Weston

Hello! I like a 3 or so on the Matt scale I think.

  • Ted A

42 is the real answer, but since there’s a different scale than the universe I’ll split the difference and say: 3

  • Jan Scott

Preference is around 3 probably. Or maybe 2 on a picky day.

  • Florian S.

I like a little bit of feedback with my nibs. As I write pretty small and have best writing with fine nibs, that is not a problem 😉

  • Jimmy

I would love to win. Good luck to all

  • Lucien de La Rose

On the Matt Armstrong scale, I prefer a 1 (butter smooth) nib. I have enough coarse nibs already (as i only own cheap pens) and would like to experience the butter smoothness everyone talks about.

    I hope I win…..but we’ll see

  • xilebat

Thanks for reviewing the Diplomat Aero. You want the brown one. This one you want to give to me because it’s a 2.5-3 on the Armstrong Smoothness scale (my taste as well).

  • Yehuda Hurwitz

Hi Matt – thank you for all your great reviews. The Pen Habbit is a must read for fountain pen enthusiasts.

I like a nib with the slightest tooth, so I would need to go with a 4-5 on the Matt Armstrong smoothness scale.

  • Pascal Leers

I like my nib on a 2,5 on the “Matt Armstrong feedback scale”. As I prefer western Extra Fine nibs, I’m used to feel a little bit of feedback.

  • EelyHovercraft

I love it when the nib provides that reassuring tactile feedback, so I guess I’m a 3 on the scale

  • Nicholas Dolce

I love the feeling of cursive italics and Platinum nibs. So less than buttery smooth for sure.

  • Rahul Singh

Thanks for the lovely giveaway. I prefer 3-4 on the scale. Enough to feel the nib-paper connection.

  • Rob

    Amazing. Thanks!!

  • Mel G

I truly enjoy writing with a smooth nib, but I like just a hint of feedback. I’d say about a 2 on the “Matt Armstrong Feedback Scale”

  • June Thomas

    I’m a 2 or a 3! Thanks, Matt!

  • DexterL

Thanks for the review and the giveaway.

  • Ben Stolz

I’d go with a 4. My writing is small so if it fishes too much my writing isn’t so legible.

  • Gustavo

    Thank you!

  • hildawg30

Great looking pen! Would love to try it out. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • MKR

I think 3 or 4 is my preference for a medium-weight pen, but lower for a heavier pen and higher for a lighter pen.

  • KT

I generally hover around a 2 or 3, but sometimes really dig the tactile feel of finer nibs.

  • Mackenzie Kurzynski

Thanks for putting up a review of this Matt. I was considering getting an Aero for grad school note taking, and TA duties. I like about a 2-3 on the “Matt Armstrong Feedback Scale”.

  • ppdiaporama

Thanks for the review … I looked at these last week at my local pen shop. I agree, there is something about the brown version!

As for smoothness … I like it pretty slick. Probably around 2 or even 1.5.

  • Ian

I just noticed that Massdrop have it again and I would likely be all over that if not for the still-poor-but-better-than-it-was Aussie dollar. Looks amazing! As for the nibs: Smooth is good, probably 2-3.

  • Kittenblitz

I prefer a 3-4 on the Matt Scale.

  • bimmerin

I like my nibs glassy, but with some control. So maybe around 1.75 -2

  • Sandra M.

Hey Matt, thanks for this giveaway, your excellent reviews and your honesty. I happen to prefer a 3-4 on the feedback scale. So, something smooth with a bit of kick. I find that it’s also the most realistic expectation I can afford right now, since my budget currently impedes me from aiming for ones and twos, lol.

  • Ronald B

On the “Matt Armstrong Feedback Scale”I would say around 3.

  • writingrav

I’d be happy to take this one off your hands

  • Rodja

    I would say 2 or 3

  • ȣ Mark ȣ

Great review Matt! I’ve seen Diplomat around the Internet but never had any good information on any of their pens. I really like the unique aesthetic of this pen. I’m also glad to here that you rate the feedback at 2-2.5 because I prefer about a 3.

  • Daniel

Thanks for the review and the giveaway.

    I think I’m probably around a 3 or 4 on the MAFS.

  • Pedro Schreiber

I’d love my everyday carry Lamy 2000 to have a 1 nib smoothness. :~~ I feel like I’m going to need to do some polishing on it

  • Christian Haitz

Awesome pen! I love the matte finish!

  • Ngọc Nguyễn Bảo

I prefer pens with a lot of feedback, so I think that 5 – 7 is good for me :).

  • David H

Gorgeous pen. I like a bit of feedback, but not much at all; 2-3 I’d guess!

  • rdcalhoon

I like a 3 or so on your scale. Thanks for a chance at this intriguing pen.

  • Sahil

Thanks for the review. I’d also like one in brown!

As for the nib smoothness, I would say anything between 1.5 to 3. it should be a wet writer but anything too smooth gets a little boring after a while.

  • Brian

I agree with most of the responses here that around 3 is the sweet spot. Need to have some control on the page, but too much feedback is annoying!

  • Dror Zellner

Hi Matt, I’d have to say on your scale I like it to be somewhere between 1 and 3. I could use scratchy pen to the extent of writing with dip nibs, but there’s nothing like a quality smooth nib for writing a good letter

  • Maria Castillo

On the “Matt Scale” my guess would be a 2 or a 3. I may not have the guts to experience a 1 on such scale. Wish me luck, Matt! So glad you’re getting yours soon. Thanks for this opportunity!

  • Kevin Guo

I’d say 4; I find myself complaining more often about feedback but still have intense feelings against super smooth nibs. A Platinum 3776 SF is on its way to me as I type this.

  • Rania Kaur

I would say 4 or 5. I think having feedback is nice but I don’t like sacrificing the control. Then again, I haven’t tried many fountain pens within the range (:

  • Anony Mous

For me, the smoother the better. I would say 1-3.

  • Pavel C

I would say the best for me is from 5 to 2. I really like the feel of Platinum nibs and also smooth nibs, so the scale is broad.

  • Sebastian Evans

I really like that pencil like feedback some nibs give, so maybe around 4 or 3.

  • Crystia

To be on the safe side (as I am rather new to fountain pens) I think I’d land somewhere between a 2 and a 5 on the Matt Armstrong smoothness scale. Not exactly sure yet.

  • Seems like a great pen! I’d love to own one, especially since I am currently on diplomatic business (hehe)

  • Marie-Paule Graham

I like my nibs around the 2-4 mark. Thanks for another interesting review, Matt.

  • Mukund Sundararajan

I would say two or three; I like it fairly smooth overall

  • Yagan Kiely

    I like both a 1 (sans baby’s bottom) and a 4

  • Emily Charles

If there’s something smoother than butter on hot glass, I’ll take it! I don’t like the feeling of feedback at all.

  • BadassMcKill

I like a little feedback, almost like writing with a nice wooden pencil but I’m not picky if the pen is on the smoother side

  • miguel oxamendi

Thanks for the contest. I’d say I enjoy an 3 on the scale. Butter smooth with a touch of feedback.

  • Esteban Maroto

    I like it smooth. Maybe a 2-3.

  • Tomi Adelson

Lovely pen and review. I think I’m a 3-4 on the nib feedback “scale”.

  • Geneviève

Thanks for the giveaway! I appreciate pens with just a touch of feedback, so probably 3 or 4 on your scale.

  • Chris Pearson

I like a little bit of feel to mine, but hate scratchy so I guess that’s in the 5 ish ball park? That said I have a Namisu Nova Broad with I’d put at about a 3 which I also enjoy.

  • Katy Rotman

    about 3-4 i guess…

  • sharon888

Three is my number on the Matt scale. Thanks for the chance to win!

  • natsora

Thank you for doing the giveaway, and spend so much time reviewing pens and inks. I would love a pen with level 4 or 5 of feedback.

  • Leonard Tan

One a scale of 1 to 10, I like my pens to be about 3. Not too slippery, but mostly laying down a wet line. That’s because I’m still new to this hobby.

  • gadgetfanboy

    I think I’m a 3. Like a smooth pencil. Like a Sailor 21k 1911 series nib! But some days, I want a 1.

  • Andrew Coon

    3 is what I prefer

  • kevin parks

On the Matt Armstrong scale: 1 smooth (butter on hot glass), 5 average, 10 gritty (witting on course sandpaper)

    Give me an 8.

I like a gritty under polished nib. Wet, and perfect alignment (so I am not talking about scratchiness due to misalignment or dryness) but I don’t like my IRIDIUM BALLZ over polished. I dig the gritty pencil like texture of Aurora and Platinum pens, (especially on today’s smooth and chalky papers).

  • Lauren

I like some feedback, so a 2 or 3? Maybe?
    Thanks for the chance!

  • Evrim Binbaş

Dear Matt, this is my comment to participate in the Diplomat Aero Raffle.

I like feedback on my nibs. Among the pens that I own, Platinum nibs are the ones I enjoy most. So, in your scale, I would say 4 is my preferred feedback level.

Thank you so very much for your videos. I always enjoy them. Keep up the good work, please!

  • Bogdan Claudiu

Thanks for all the awesome reviews that you make!
On Matt scale, I really enjoy some smoothness, somewhere around 2.

  • Marty C.

I generally like a pretty low Matt Value — maybe 2 to 3.

  • Kristof Korwisi

A smooth nib is fine, but–especially on finer nibs–I like a little scratchyness here and there 🙂 I go for 3 to 4 on broader nibs and about 6 to 7 on fine and extra fine nibs.
And–as this is my first comment on your blog–I’d like to thank you for all the great reviews and your opinion!

  • Daniel Street

I’d love one of these pens! My favorite nib feel is a 3 or 4. I want it to be quite smooth, but still controllable.

  • Jeremy George

2 to 3. I do like a nice smooth pen.

  • Dushyiant Laverty

Thanks for the review and the giveaway I would like to try a pen a bit out of my price range also a 3 on your feedback scale

  • Hao

Thanks for reviewing this pen, Matt! I have a TWSBI 580AL with a EF nib, and a Montblanc 146 with a F nib. I like nibs to be nice and smooth, so regarding the Matt Armstrong scale, maybe a 3.

  • Fahad Habib

I like it to be as smooth as butter on a frying pan, so on your scale it should be 1.

  • Walker Cobb

Gotta say, I’ve never had a pen with a nib below a 3, but I’d love to see a 1 someday.

  • Dylan K.

Hey there, thanks for the giveaway!! I prefer nibs at about 2-3 on the Armstrong Scale.

  • Fredrik

I like pens around 3-4 on the Matt Armstrong Feedback Scale.

  • Joanna Mei

I’m around a 3 or 4 on the Matt Armstrong Feedback Scale. I’m not a huge fan of the smooth as glass nib. I prefer some degree of feedback to help guide my writing. Thanks for the giveaway! I know its hard but I appreciate your transparency and dedication to your principles.

  • Julia van der Wyk

Oh, I like my nibs from 3-5 but can handle varying feedback levels depending on how I am using it. But when you say “smooth wet writer “, I am in.

  • The Tea Witch

Champion giveaway Matt! I would say a 2 on the feedback scale for me-the smoother the better in my book :)! Laura AKA The Tea Witch x

  • Pedro Nuno Moura

I really like smooth gliding nibs…in Matt’s scale I point to the 1-2 position!
Let’s see if I can bring it to Portugal!!! 🙂

  • Paul Roodenburg

Very happy with your review matt and i think I will go for buttery smmoth on this one. Although i like the feedback on my vintage MB’s and CS 🙂

  • gravesit

    Thanks Matt, fingers crossed!

  • Derick Solano Veitia

would love this pen in my collection…Great review! and thanks!!!

  • p hl

I don’t know exactly what number I would like best, probably 2, I prefer very little feedback.

  • Dave Busse

Thanks for the give-away. Appreciate your reviews. As for the scale, I think I prefer about a 4.

  • Lez Cartwright

I like to hear nibs sing… 5 going on 6.

  • scott d

My everyday writing is on regular copy paper or Staples Sustainable Earth so I usually run at 3-5 on the feedback scale. But every once in awhile I get my Lamy 2000 out and some Tomoe River and glide around the page to my heart’s content with a feedback of about 1.

  • Maya

I like some feedback, so 4-5 I’d guess.

  • Kenny

I like my nibs buttery smooth, with minimal feedback. Probably somewhere between a 1 and 2 on the Armstrong scale.

  • ernesto gonzález

    2.5 in Matt scale

  • Tami

My preference is between 3 and a 4. Sometimes I like the smooth Pelikan glide, other times I like the Sailor scratch. Thank you for the giveaway!

  • Brannen Hall

I love smooth nibs, but at one point I had the opportunity to try out a Cross pen, and that is the only nib I have found too smooth— it provided no feedback, but maybe it would be something I would come to love. So, I would say I prefer a nib in the two to three range on the “Matt Armstrong Feedback Scale.”

  • Can Berk Çetin

I prefer a little tooth or feedback on a Fine nib and near complete smoothness on Medium.
I use medium at more serious and creative writing and want my pen dance on the paper. With the fine nib, it take notes or corrections and editing on an existing writing, with different colour.

As far as I can see, the only drawback of this pen is steel nib. But if you think really rationally and objectively, there is not, actually, any problem with nib being steel. There are gold nibs as solid as steel can be. I think it is just the idea of having a more valuable material on your writing instrument. What can you do, it is a material world, right 🙂

  • Jo-Anne Teal

Always enjoy your detailed reviews and I certainly agree with you that the pen is uniquely designed. I don’t know the exact difference between scratchy and feedback(y) but as I just began this interest it will take me a while to catch on to the nuances :))

  • AS Tseng

I like it a bit smoother, roughly a 4-5 for me.

  • Daniel K

Between 1 and 3, depending on my mood 😉

  • visvamitra

I enjoy a 3-4 on the feedback scale. I like when the pen writes smoothly but in the same time it’s pleasant to feel the paper under the nib.

  • Alex Asenov

As many people do, 3-4 on the Matt scale is awesome!

  • Patrick T

    I’ll go with a 4. A little smoother than a 5.

  • Scrib

Nice giveaway 🙂 Thanks for keeping up the good work, and your honesty!

    On the Matt Armstrong scale of things, I’d say 3 – 4, but I’ll happily give a home to a 2 to 2.5 😀

  • David Cariker

I’m at about a 2-4 on the feedback scale, but that varies day-to-day.

  • Dragonmaster Lou

It’s a sweet pen! Thanks for the review and give away!

  • I like my pen pretty smooth but not like a dry erase marker. I’ll say 3 on Matt’s scale.

  • Schrift

Very nice review. I’d had my eye on this pen, and found your blog when looking for a review. Lots of great content here…my morning’s productivity was shot, thank you very much.

  • knotaway

    I’d say 2 or 3

  • David Rea

Great review, thank you for introducing me to Diplomat and doing this giveaway! I guess I enjoy 2-3 on the Armstrong feedback scale…but for very fine pens it’s OK by me if it creeps up a bit higher. Sounds like this nib would be a good fit for me.

  • Mark Knoblauch

I’m so glad to see this brand get some love –like Kaweco, I feel Diplomat is a much under-appreciated company making quality fountain pens. Thanks for doing both the review and the giveaway!

  • Theo Stylianou

2-3 on the matt scale. Nice review btw

  • Marek K.

On Matt’s scale – probably 2 or 3, I like only just a hint of feedback; currently the best one just glides above the paper (short nib).

  • Huw Simmons

    Beautiful pen! I prefer a 3, possibly a 4, for feedback. Thanks!

  • Mathias Schmerbach

I really love my Pelikan M805 nib, which is totally smooth. But I also enjoy writing with nibs that give feedback, as long as it does not get too scratchy. So everything between 1 and 5 is fine with me, I guess.

  • Caroline LOVES pears

I generally like it smooth but with enough feedback so it doesn’t feel “slippery”. I would a say a 2 or 3.

  • Richard Conejo

Nice looking pen which is a little different to what is out there. This is on the wish list as I prefer the smoothness to be around a 3. Keep the reviews coming as I enjoy watching the videos.

  • Kathi Derevan

I’m happy with a pen that has a 2-ish on the Matt Feedback Scale.

  • 57721

I actually don’t really know how smooth I like my pens. I’m probably an ignoramus for writing that, but as long as a pen isn’t actually scratchy, I like nibs with feedback, and I like nibs that glide over the paper, too (although I might never have actually used a pen where the nibs is that smooth yet, to be honest). I, for example, really like how my Namisu Nova with an EF Ti nib from Bock writes. It has very distinct feedback, an interesting “bounce” and makes quite a lot of noise when writing (it somehow sounds as if it were scratchy, while it isn’t), but I really like its performance.

Maybe I just like the variation. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • Corelliz

Hey, I’m still searching for the ultimate ‘1’. I’ll find it one day.

  • Wen

Tough question. I feel I favor a 4 or 6, too slick gives me a harder time controlling the shape of letters

  • David Durfee

Oh the Humanity – the WKRP turkey drop. I like my nib to sing, no resistance.

  • Nick Lerodox

    Thanks for the review, Matt!

Although I think 1’s are fun to play around with, In terms of writing I really enjoy a 2-3. Just enough feedback so I don’t feel like I can easily slip right off the paper 😉

  • Randall Meade

Thank you for all the great reviews that you provide. I prefer my nibs to be about a 2. Enough feedback so you know there is a nib on smooth paper but not much more. I also don’t mind if the nib “sings”.

  • nergihan

Thanks for giveaway. I prefer 3-4 on the scale. Enough to feel the nib-paper connection.

  • Oh, probably a 2 or a 3, I’d guess.

I’m with you, man. I kinda prefer a c/c pen. Maybe that’s because I change inks so often, but it’s a perfectly fine filling system.

The Diplomat fine nib is excellent, by the way. It’s not very fine, but it does have a little bit of springy flex to it. I tend to get most of my Diplomats in fine nibs, as a result.

  • otak1

I’d like to say, it’s superb design and something I cannot afford. Don’t think that steel M nib with low feedback will outperform Sailor and Platinum steel nibs for me, but I believe this can be quite good. And also I’m big fan of zeppelins and ancient aircraft.

  • P.Panagiotidis

    Thanks for the giveaway

  • walkingby

love this pen – hope will be the lucky winner) @ the highest “Matt Armstrong Feedback Scale”

  • Epichartou

I prefer between 3 and 4. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Daniel R

  • Paul Davidson

From my understanding of the MAFS, I believe around 2 or 3 would be my sweet spot. Thanks for the chance to win a nice pen.

  • ZaphodBB

This pen is on my wish list (the list that can get very long!) so a giveaway entry sounds great.

    I’m a “little-to-no” feedback kinda guy, so I would be a 1 or a 2 on the scale.

    Nice review…

  • Nicolò Villa

My preference is a 3 or 2 on Matt’s scale. 🙂 Great reviews as always!

  • Eric RIce

I’d say I’d like a 3 or 4 in feedback. I want to have a pen that’s smooth and I don’t notice it when I’m writing, but I also want to be able to feel the feedback so I can appreciate the experience of writing with a fine pen.

  • Allan Engelhardt

I like them around 3 on your scale. 1 is just too weird.

  • Aadharsh Pannirselvam

    On the Matt Scale, I prefer a 1 or maybe a 2

  • I’m a smooth operator myself: 1 🙂

  • Achim

A really nice pen, woul be nicer, if there was an EF available.

  • shang-tse chen

Probably 2 or 3. I like it smooth, but not too smooth. 🙂

  • Timothy Ackerman

It would definitely be a 5 only the “Matt Armstrong Feedback Scale”, and i hope for the best of luck.

  • Luke Kurzawa

Please please please. Such a cool looking pen.

  • Alexey Shashkin

    2 on the Matt scale

  • Ce Shang

Still very new to fountain pens, but this sounds like a great pen! I’m probably a 2.

  • Alex L

I like a 2-3 on the feedback scale, only enough to feel like I’m writing on paper

I have studied the Matt Armstrong feedback scale for years. In fact, I graduated from Columbia university with a master’s degree in Feedback Scales, and a minor in Matt Armstrong studies. My years of strenuous training and unwavering commitment to rating pens betweeen “on sandpaper” and “hot knife through butter” have prepared me for this very moment. My unadulterated opinion of this nib, according to the internationally accepted standard that is the MAFS, is that this pen is a solid 3.25 (i.e. Dragging a melting ice cube across room-temperature aluminum foil).

  • Becky r

    I like about a 3. I don’t like much scratchy-ness.

  • Didn’t try enough different nibs yet… But so far, I’d prefer a rather smooth writing experience, I guess it makes it a 2-4. 🙂

  • Ler Ler Ma

Matt, I love your reviews a lot!! You always review pens I would otherwise not notice a lot, like this Diplomat. Thank you very much for doing this awesome giveaway!

    I like smooth-like-butter nibs, I guess about a 3?

  • Smithman

Matt-The review of the Diplomat Aero is greatly appreciated. It has seemed interesting but not much written about. Great to hear how good it is.

  • Smithman

I forgot to make comment concerning feedback scale. My preferences is about 3 on the Matt Armstrong Feedback Scale.

  • Joseph Kardia

Thank you so much for this review, this is almost definitely going onto my shortlist!

  • Daven Savla

I would love this pen. Regarding feedback, I’m right at a 5.

  • Yuqi Liu

I’d like a 3 on the feedback scale for a good balance between writing speed and control.

  • Evan Douglas

I’d have to say 2-3, just enough to know I’m actually making contact with the paper.

  • Julio Manzo

Boy, as a broke college student, I sure would appreciate a free pen 😉

  • Cindy

the pen looks really nice! I think I prefer a 2 or a 3 for feedback since I like to feel the paper a bit when i’m writing.

  • Denise

With a review like this you’re making my wishlist grow! And I have a wide tolerance for feedback, but probably my favorite nibs would be about a 3.

  • hmm, I’d hazard to guess my “Matt Armstrong Feedback Scale” is about a three. I enjoy the tactile feel of pen on paper, but with my hands anymore, the less drag the better.

  • Robert Smith

I like a mixture of pen feedback depending on the paper in use. For a toothy paper I like a 2 or 3, for a smoother paper a 4 or 5. It is a useful scale…

Here is hoping to get this beauty!

  • Bryant Dunivan

    I’m a 2 guy i like a smooth nib

  • Brandon Sandoval

Id say my feed back preference is between 2-3. I like a smooth nib, but I like knowing that I’m writing! Thanks for the giveaway, matt (:

  • Nic H.

Lovely pen. Thanks for the transparency and honesty. Oh… and the awesome giveaway. 🙂

  • Garrett R.

I like just a little feedback or Nib Noise so maybe a 2 or 3. That is to say there is nothing wrong with a 1!

  • Erin Ellis

I would say a 3. Thank you for the wonderful giveaway.

  • Austin Tabulog

Great review as always Matt! On the “Matt Armstrong scale” I’m pretty sure I place around a 3 because some feedback is always helpful.

  • Andy Le

    Probably a 2.5 or a 2

  • Robert

As far as feedback on a nib, I prefer less… maybe a 7?

  • Karol

Hmm, I tend to prefer little feedback, one to three, but my Platinum 3776 has a lovely bite on the page which almost hums as I write, so I’d put that at 5 or 6.

  • m_hutcheson

I’m a 1 all the way. If it’s a fountain pen, I want it as smooth as possible. Thanks for the giveaway Matt!

  • Emil Ferdman

Thanks for the giveaway! This pen looks amazing! I prefer mine anywhere between 2 and 3

  • susan818

Beautiful pen-sort of industrial looking! I’d say #1 to answer your question.

  • Thanks for the chance to win!

I prefer little to no feedback, so a 2-3.

  • humzai

I like very little feedback. 2-3 I guess.

  • Roshan K

    Really hoping for this pen!

  • Johnny Ferreira

I think a 3 on the scale is my ideal because I like have a touch of feedback. At the same time anything higher on the scale is always nice because if it is done right it gives the pen a really premium feel.

  • Andy Pederson

Thanks for the giveaway! Keep the reviews coming!

  • Judicialbrewery

Smooth with feedback. So a 3.5? Nice pen.

  • Daniel Taub

I’d say I’m at 2 or 3 on that scale.

  • Stephen R. Valcourt

    I prefer a 2.

  • Ciaran Myers

On the universal Matt Armstrong scale of smooth, I never settle for anything more than a 4 🙂

  • Nettle Pie

This is a lovely giveaway. I would say I like anything from 2 to 4 on the MAFS. 🙂

  • tg

Matt, your reviews are stellar as always. And this pen is really interesting. Cheers!

I like some feedback, but mostly smooth nibs. So possibly 3-4ish?

  • Jonathan Mooney

I would probably prefer a nib to be around 2-3 on the MAFS (Matt Armstrong Feedback Scale). 😀

  • Fine looking pen. I’d love to win this one, especially given such a positive review.

At this point, I think my preferred feedback on the Matt Armstrong scale would be about a 4. The only very smooth nib I have is still a little off-putting for me, but I could see myself moving to a 2 or 3 after getting used to smoother nibs. Only one way to find out 🙂

  • Mary L.

Hello Matt! Thank you for doing this giveaway! I like nibs to be between maybe 3-4! It makes the pen have a noticeable presence in my hand when writing.

  • Randy Green

Tried to leave a comment on my phone and it didn’t work. Just to follow the rules – Matt Armstrong scale – 3!

  • Jennifer

nib feedback: i like anything between 1 and 7 on the matt armstrong feedback scale.
I’ve had pens that I thought I would absolutely LOVE then I’ve disappointedly put back in the packaging because they were 8–10. ::sigh::

  • Robert

I like very smooth nibs. glassy smooth on the scale.

  • vinniekowalski

Hi Matt – This is a pretty cool looking pen (ZEPPLIN!) and my current embargo on purchasing pens is being *sorely* tested. Of course, should I win this giveaway (fingers crossed), technically I wouldn’t have purchased this…

In any case, I think I would prefer a solid 4 nib on the MAFS. Butter = good. More butter = heart disease. Thanks and keep up the good work!

  • Bradley Weidemann

I don’t mind a fair amount of feedback. The sense of feeling the texture of the paper is part of the joy of using a fountain pen to me. So, I would say, anywhere between 1 and 7.

  • Wilson Waddell

Thank you for the excellent review. I had actually been looking into this pen at an earlier date. I like to have feedback in the 3-4 on the Matt Scale.

  • Wilson Stewart

For me, its totallllly a 1! I love my pens to be as crazy glassy smooth as possible 🙂

  • John

What number is best for feed back? Well for me it’s got to be 3.1415926536….. But in all serious, some feedback is good for me, while staying smooth [ergo around 3].

  • SirSigma

I think I’m around 4 or 5 on the scale. Sometimes I like more feedback and I’ll like a pen that writes like a 6.

  • Asif

I’d be happy to have it 🙂

  • mark klages

Matt, Thank you very much for the work you do in presenting informative reviews to those of us that are new to the fountain pen world. (and to everyone else as well!).

  • mark klages

Well, seems I missed my MAFS preference. Smooth is most preferred. Should I win this pen I’ll have a benchmark to judge my pen more accurately.

  • arjunp97

Hey Matt, thanks for an awesome review! Id probably have a 1-2 on the Feedback scale.

  • Markus Poetzsch

Thanks für the time you put into this and, of course, the giveaway.
I like my nibs in the range around 4 Armstrong

  • gandesc

I like my nibs something like 8-9 on the “Matt Armstrong Feedback Scale” 🙂

  • ellcoolj

I am new to this site as I found it from the Diplomat pen I saw on Massdrop. I really liked the sound of it and searched for reviews and found your site. Great review, honest and true to the mission of clear writing. I have read a few of your reviews and am not sure of the “Matt Armstrong Feedback Scale” but I like a nib that has a bit of give to it, so it doesn’t skip around the page. I’d guess that’s a 2- 2.5 on your scale. I’m also a fan of the Fine nib.

All that said, I like the look of the Diplomat and was considering getting one until my dishwasher repair took my spare cash! I’d love this one though!!!

  • Raphael Leroux

This is such a nice pen!!! I like smooth nibs, I’d say between 2, 4. Thanks for the giveaway, it’s very appreciated!

  • Russell

One of the things I like about fountain pens is how smooth they are. Even the slightest scratch is offputting. I guess I like a 1 or 2, max, on the Matt Armstrong scale.

  • Mishelle R

I really like my pens to be smooth with less feedback. I think probably a 3 or 4 on your scale. Way too smooth, the pen gets way from me causing fatigue.

  • island_boy

i like butter, so I’m thinking 8-9. Thanks Matt!

  • Jolene Johnson

If that’s a 2.5 then that’s perfect for me. I’m so picky and I’ve been absolutely fascinated by fountain pens since I was a little girl. I tried a cheap one once and couldn’t get the hang of it but I want to try again. This pen looks divine to write with!

  • Jacob Sandoval

Smoothness level would have to be between 2 and 3. Any lower and my pen would slip off the page! Thanks for the cool opportunity, Matt!

  • Mark Hom

Just introduced to your site and love the reviews.

  • Evan Adams

I would say that I like a 2 or 3 on the Matt feedback scale.

  • DoctorFan10

I like anywhere from 2 to 5 depending on the project at hand, but most often 2 to 3. Definitely love this pen!

  • Jonathan Burchett

On the “MAFS” I would probably best enjoy a 2. 🙂

  • Richard Schwalk

I like to have minimal feedback. So I like 1-3.

  • Tanner Woolf

I would probably be about a 3 on the Matt scale!

  • Myroslava Luzina

I keep imagining that, in keeping with the “think different” adage, I like a 3-4 on the MAFS scale, but the frequency with which I grab my lowly Hero 329 that happens to have a nib that sings “TWOOOO” shows me, yes, my true preference is 2.

  • Howard Eisen

Some feedback or my writing gets too sloppy. Probably a 3

  • Sandy Stevens

My feedback level would have to be at around 2/3. I absolutely love that smooth feeling, but I like that bit of tooth. Awesome giveaway, Matt!

  • Jessica Bianchi

Hey Matt! Thanks for the giveaway! I like my nibs a 2.5 on the scale because you can’t beat how nice a buttery smooth nib feels but also it feels like you have a bit of control with a 2.5 as it is not a 1 you still have a bit of feedback!
Love your vids! Keep it up! 😀

  • Diana Gilmore

thanks for the reviews – I am learning a lot about fountain pens from you. being a newbie, I am not sure what my MAFS number is yet, but for now I am going to say 4. 😉

  • Henrique Cardoso Delgado

    Smooth 4,5
    Keep up the nice work
