[Finished] Aurora Optima Giveaway!!!1!!!ZOMG!

  • 9/7/2016 20:44 PDT : I was made aware of the fact that the Subscribe to Newsletter link was broken. I have resolved it and it should now work. It may require to reload the page.

Y’all know how much I love me a good giveaway on the blog. I’ve done a bunch of them. But I think it’s safe to say that Kenro Industries has REALLY stepped up the giveaway game with this one.

That’s right. Kenro Industries is allowing me to give away an Aurora Optima ($595 value). And the best part, you get to pick the color you want AND the nib choice you want.  (Some restrictions apply. See below.)

Now, if you’re a regular here on The Pen Habit, you know I really like the Aurora Optima, and I have for a long time. In fact, I liked it so much, it was my #2 in my Top Pens list for Season 3. I purchased the Blue version pictured above, and fell in love with the pen. It’s one of the most comfortable writers in my collection. It’s light and well-balanced, with a long section that makes for a very comfortable grip. They’re well-made, out of really beautiful materials. Aurora is one of the few European manufacturers who still makes all their own nibs in-house, and the attention to quality control really shows. Heck, they even still cut their feeds from raw ebonite. I loved my first Optima so much that I picked up a second one at the San Francisco Pen Show from Vanness Pens…this time in green.

A couple of months ago, Kenro announced that the prices for the Optima were being cut by $200 (after, I might add, I purchased my first Optima). I though the pen was worth it at the old price. But at this new price, it is one of the best values for luxury pens on the market today. And to celebrate this new price drop, Kenro Industries has very graciously allowed me to give away an Aurora Optima here on The Pen Habit. The winner will get to pick from the Optima production line colors: Black with Gold Trim, Black with Silver Trim, Blue with Gold trim, Blue with Silver Trim, Burgundy with Silver Trim, Green with Gold Trim, or Grey (Perla) with Silver Trim.

In addition to picking the color of pen you want, Kenro is also allowing the winner to pick the nib they want. This is pretty cool, because Aurora has a ton of nib options that you can’t really get anywhere else without sending your pen to a nibmeister. The nib options on this pen include: Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, Broad, Extra Broad, Italic, Stub, and Oblique. (And, just FYI, Aurora’s Italics are true italics…quite crisp and sharp.)

Unfortunately, this giveaway is only available to US residents. Kenro is the distributor for Aurora in the US, and there are some limitations about where they can send the pens.  If you are in the US, check out the Rafflecopter box below for several different ways that you can enter.  (If you’re outside of the US, don’t fret as we still have some other GREAT giveaways coming up soon. But if you really want an Optima, Vanness Pens is offering an additional 10% off Optimas if you use the code PENHABIT when you order. You can check out their selection at https://vanness1938.com/collections/aurora-pens.)

Before you can enter, please allow me to throw in the legalese stuff:

Terms & Conditions: Giveaway is open only to residents of the United States. The prize for this giveaway was provided free of charge by Kenro Industries. Giveaway ends September 24, 2016 at 12:00 AM PDT. Winners will be selected at random by Rafflecopter.com and verified by The Pen Habit. Winner will have 72 hours to respond with color and nib selection before prize is forfeited and a new winner is selected. Kenro Industries will be responsible for shipping prizes to the winners. Neither Kenro Industries nor The Pen Habit/Inky Fingers LLC will be responsible for prizes that are not received by user. No purchase necessary to enter. By providing your information in this form, you are providing your information to The Pen Habit only. I do not share or sell personal information and will use any information only for the purpose of contacting the winner.

And now, here’s how you enter:

  • randomperson3

Awesome giveaway! I would want a Blue with Silver Trim with an extra broad nib!

  • Otaku chan

Hmm I guess of I won I would love a blue with gold trim and a ef nib please. 😃

  • Disasuality

I’d go with blue and gold trim, probably with a medium nib. Though maybe I would want a broad and have a nibmeister work on it, for a pen this nice.

  • Nick Bernstein

Holy smoke! There’s a lot of people. I’d go with green and bold.
Also, I gave the wrong instagram handle on the survey, it’s @nickbernsteinart not @nickbernstein. Can you re-post the subscription link. I’m not sure it actually subscribed.

  • Cynthia

I would love the blue with silver trim in extra broad! I recently saw the demonstrators and wow are they beautiful!

  • David Murphy

Thank you for the opportunity. The Burgundy with the italic nib..

  • Michael

Would love the green with the fine nib!

  • bjkott

I already have two Optimas. Not certain of the color but I think I would go for a BB nib.

  • David Allen Rivera

I would select the Blue with a Fine Nib.

  • Espo

I’m torn, the pattern has such great texture, the grey or the red. I don’t think there it’s possible to make a bad choice here, and I tend toward the finer nibs.

  • slkinsey

All the colors are great. I suppose if I had to choose right now, I’d get the grey color with an italic nib. Or a stub nib. Or an extra-broad.

  • Dima Fantalis

Thank you Matt! I am really afraid from the day you return to work 🙂
I would like to have the Perla with a stub.

  • brian c

    Thanks for doing this!

  • Don

FP freaks talk about “grail pens.” Strange how one’s grail pen changes, oh, about every other day, at least for me, that is. The Aurora Optima used to be a grail pen for me . . .. I guess you could say it still is. However, I also kind of like the S.T. Dupont Karl Lagerfeld 430670 Lotus Red in lacquer.

  • Jose Zuniga

Thanks for doing this Matt, if I win I would like Gray in Fine.

  • Andrew

would love the red in a Broad! I waaay too many blue pens and no B!!!

  • Zach Shoemaker

I’d want the green with an oblique nib

  • DKC

Wonderful giveaway! I’d go for a blue in medium. Are these similar in size to the 88?

  • David Cariker

It would be a hard choice between the Perla or Blue/gold. But the nib choice is easy, Italic for sure.

  • JDB

sweet! I would have to get the green with an oblique nib

  • Marsie McLendon

Thanks for the giveaway! *If* I won, I’d select the Burgundy with stub nib (or maybe an italic nib, as I’ve never tried a crisp italic nib before). (By the way, I normally like black pens–I’m boring that way–but that Burgundy is just too lovely to pass up.)

  • Matt, this is generous beyond belief. For me, I’d love the white/grey. It looks really cool. I would love a broad nib and the idea of some feedback is great. I saw that in your earlier review and I find that I write better with a little feedback than when the pen simply glides across the paper.

  • Christian

  • Dan Gilardi

Hello Matt…. I would love to have the Blue with gold trim, and a fine nib. Also I want to say that Watching your posts has inspired me, or perhaps enabled me would be a better term, to become a bit of a collector, and restorer of fountain pens. Being a piano teacher, I have shared my love of fountain pens with my students which are now pen geeks as well…. We even spend a few minutes of each lesson, talking about our latest acquisitions, cursive writing, and pen pals… They love it too…:)

    • 1) Thank you!
      2) My hat goes off you to as a Piano Teacher. I’ve been playing since I was four years old, and it’s one of the best things in my life. I always like to thank people to teach young ones (regardless of the level) how to be musicians. So, thank you for what you do!

  • Andy Vickery

    I hope I win!!! Green w/ Broad.

  • Brandon Walls

While I’m not usually the kind of guy to go for a flashy pen, there’s something about the almost geologic look to the Optima that’s intrigued me. If I were to win the raffle, I’d go for a blue and gold pen with a fine nib. The blue and gold with the Greek key really gives me the image of an Olympian temple overlooking the Mediterranean.

  • Dorthea

If I won, I would like black with gold trim and an extra fine nib.

  • JR Gomoll

If I were to win, I’d probably have to go with the blue in fine. Good luck everyone!

  • Tom Hermes

Love the videos….I’d go for the green, with a stub nib.

  • SBBC

    Grey in extra fine

  • SBBC

Hey Matt, so this is a bit of a mix up. I did all the entries (logged in with my fb account) but, like an idiot, I put in my twitter handle wrong. It wouldn’t let me go back and change it so that you could see that my real twitter account is actually following you. So I did the entries again (this time logged in under my e-mail, bryanbaltz@gmail.com) using my corrected information. I hope that doesn’t mess anything up. Also, I already commented my preference but I will post again; Grey pen with extra fine nib.

    • I think it should be fine. I’ll keep this in mind in case your name gets drawn.

  • Ryan D

Awesome giveaway, Matt! I would love the Burgundy in Medium!

  • Oscar Rodriguez

Kenro must have some serious income to give away an Optima.

If I won, I would probably get the blue Optima with an Extra Fine nib!

    • Randy R

True, but look at all the advertising and interest they’ve generated. I had not heard of them before, but I’ve been to their site several times as a result of this! I’d call that a shrewd move. There’s no way I could afford such a pen on my own, but I do wish you and everyone the best of luck “competing” against me for one of these gorgeous pens! 😀

  • jane pilecki

Beautiful pen. I would like the burgundy pen with an oblique nib on it!

  • Arvin Arakelian

What an awesome giveaway! I would love the Gray with a fine nib!

  • Ray Wang

I would like the blue with fine

  • Emerald Green with Fine nib.

  • Ian Wolfe

Color is easy: Green with gold trim

Nib is much more difficult but I have it narrowed down to broad, extra broad, italic, or stub.

As giveaways go, I’m pretty sure I won’t have to worry about making such a difficult choice. My luck is terrible.

  • slgates

Beautiful pens! A dream! I’d go Green with Gold Trim with a stub nib.

  • Ameeta82

This is such a beautiful looking pen! I would go with blue in a medium nib if I won.

Fantastic giveaway. I would go with the grey Perla and an an EF or maybe try an Italic.

  • Wrathen Stormbringer

I would go with Perla Grey and an Oblique nib.

I really prefer rhodium/silver trim on my pens so that kind of limited my options but grey is up there in my top favorite colors and I really like the marbled look on these Optimas. I have tried an oblique before and liked it but it was a friends pens so I had to return it. I would love the opportunity to have one in my own collection. Thanks again for the Giveaway Matt!

  • Evans Adams

  • Alfredo Luis

I think I would go with the burgundy and a medium nib if I win

Man that pen looks amazing, I believe green with a medium nib would be great.

  • reedrelay

Right now, I’m leaning towards the green with a stub nib, but that burgundy is nice too….or maybe a fine nib, hmmm.

  • Rolanda David

This pen is absolute gorgeous!!! I would have to say the Burgundy with Silver Trim is my favorite. Since in new to fountain pens I would go with the fine nib.

  • Franz

Hi Matt! Can’t believe I almost missed this giveaway. Thanks for doing this.
Well, I think I’d go for the Burgundy color, and a double broad nib. Just because… =)

  • Lucian82

Hi my favourite is the blue/gold colour. Probably with a medium nib 🙂

I would go with the green in fine!

  • Timothy S

The green the fine point nib would be awesome.

  • Dominique

I would love to have the Grey pen with a stub or an oblique nib!

  • Stephanie

Thanks for the giveaway! I’d go with the green in an italic.

  • Alicia Arias

Thank you for this amazing giveaway! I would love the green with a fine nib.

  • Paul Ponville

Hard to choose. All of the colors look great. Blue with a medium nib.

  • Neil Pollock

    Who is the lucky winner?

  • jdwilli09

Super bummed I missed the deadline by 36 hours. The first couple of times after the announcement of the giveaway I didn’t see the giveaways. I assumed I’d make it back in time, and just enter “giveaway” into the search. Maybe next one though. Hopefully it’s something as good as the Optima. I thought about breaking my rule of never linking away from a YouTube video, but just couldn’t quite make myself do it. It does leave me with a question though, Vanness runs right through San Francisco, and you mentioned the San Francisco show, even though I see this shop is in Arkansas, but it made me wonder if you know of any places in San Francisco to go for shopping? I drive or train up to SF about 6-10 times a year for Doctors visits at UCSF and I stay on Sutter St. about 5 blocks from Vannness. So, it’s a bunch of random unrelated words that made me curious, if anyone knew. Thanks for the great reviews, and videos Matt. I wish I had some extra dollars to give. I’m sure I will be able to give a little something soon I hope. I finally just bought a silent treatment from my wife in the form of a New Lamy 2000 on Ebay for 105 all in. I was pretty happy, the wife was NOT. But I feel like it sort of legitimizes my pens, it’s always as if you are just supposed to have a 2000. I was wondering if you have ever done an article for the site or a video about the pen you most regret selling, or losing I guess. When I first got into Fountain pens and knew no better, an in-law who has money bought a Pearl and Black Parker Duofold Centennial, which he immediately gummed up and then didn’t want to deal with fountain pens anymore, it was just a purchase he made because some of the other higher ups at his work had been using fountain pens, so he sold it to me for $150. It was a Fine Point that he had just used the quink cart on, and didn’t seat it correctly and so, I had some cleaning to do, and I used the converter and ran it with Aurora Black, Noodler’s Heart of Darkness, and finally Iroshizuku Take-Sumi. It wrote like a dream. Then after 3 fills I though I could sell it and get 3 maybe 4 decent pens to start a collection. So I put it on Ebay and even though I made money, someone else got a steal at $262 for a lightly used pen I used the money to buy a Vanishing point and the Fahrney’s Signatures II, and one of the 3 packs of Iroshizuku inks. Now I just think of the fact that if I ever want to replace that pen with a new one(which I’ve already considered), it’ll cost me double what I sold it for and probably 5X my profit. Wow, I am rambling. Me, a keyboard, and lack of sleep usually results in this. Thanks to whoever reads this, thanks to Matt Armstrong for the high quality, great reviews, and articles. Not to mention the giveaways. I am sure everyone appreciates it. Best wishes, looking forward to the rest of Season 4. And congratulations to whoever won that Beautiful pen.
